HYDERABAD: As many as 20 activists of the Darsgah-Jihad-o-Shahadat , a city based organisation, were arrested on Wednesday when they tried to stage a protest against the demolition of Babri Masjid at Ayodhya 25 years ago.
The activists wearing black clothes marched out of the Darulshifa mosque when the police who were waiting in the grounds surrounded them. The group took out an effigy and burnt it, raising slogans against the leaders who they believed were responsible for the demolition.
Cops bundled them into the police vans. They were shifted to Kanchanbagh police station where they were detained for the rest of the day. In the evening, all of them were let off, the police said.
Shops and business establishments in the Old City areas including the Pathergatti, Madina Building, Laad Bazaar and Gulzar Houz markets remained closed for most part of the day. Schools had declared a holiday as a precautionary measure.
Deputy Commissioner of police (south), V. Satyanarayana, said that no untoward incident occurred in the Old City following the bandh call.
“About 3,500 policemen were drafted for the security arrangements. Teams from the IT cell were monitoring social media content to prevent any untoward incident,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Majlis Bachao Tehreek group submitted a memorandum to the Governor Mr E. S. L. Narsimhan.
