Telangana: NGO sees wasteful spending

The present engineering wing declared that these projects were of not much use, resulting in the govt scrapping them.

Hyderabad: A civil society organisaton has alleged administrative inefficiency and wastage of public money by bureaucrats and engineers associated with Pranahita-Chevella, Indirasagar, Rajivsagar and Dummugudem tail pond. In 2008, the then government took up these projects based on reports by engineering department, consultants WAPCOS and Rs 15,000 crore, according to M. Padmanabha Reddy, retired IFS officer and secretary, Forum for Good Governance. The present engineering wing and the same consultancy declared that these projects were of not much use, resulting in the government scrapping them, he said.

“While the engineering chief report of 2008 stated that quantity of water proposed for Pranahita was 160 tmc ft, the second report by the officials pointed out that divertible water at 148 ft full reservoir level was just 44 tmc ft. Why this big variation,” he asked. Mobilisation advances to the tune of Rs 3,644 were paid to contractors. Out of this 909 crores are yet to be recovered, Mr Reddy said.
