Thiruvananthapuram: Trash Hunt to highlight Green Congress
Thiruvananthapuram: Green Congress, this year, will be elaborate not just because it is a two-day event. There will also be some competitions even before the actual event on December 1 and 2. One of the first events that Green Army members excitedly share about is a treasure hunt, which is named ‘Trash Hunt’. The first prize winner will take home Rs 10,000 and with the second prize comes a cash prize of Rs 5000.
Green Army used to organise a smaller version of the hunt in sch-ools, during its summer camps. Students would be given clues about waste that is lying on the school compound. The first person to locate it will win the game. In this case, though, it is not waste, but Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) that participants will have to locate.
The game will help popularise the location of MRF, according to Green Army members. Green Army mentor Dr Ashin Mohan says, “Many city residents still don’t know that there is an MRF nearby where they can drop their inorganic waste. We designed the contest to attract maximum participation so that more people get to know where the MRFs are. We will be cho-osing 10 out of 34 MRFs. If people know the location of these, they will be able to win the competition.”
Another competition for designing t-shirts has already started receiving entries, according to Suj-ith Surendran, a Green Army fellow. The Congr-ess this year will be a two-day event, in which the first day will be dedicated to interacting with children from flood-hit areas.
