Kochi corporation plays hide and seek: NGT

Grapevine has it that the corporation administration is contemplating taking ways to overcome the NGT order without paying the fine.

Kochi: Uncertainty continues in the city corporation over resolving the crisis created by the National Green Tribunal directive on Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant. Even though the last date for remitting the fine of Rs 1 crore ( Rs.50 lakhs each to Central and State Pollution Control Boards), ended on November 4, the civic body has not either complied with the directive nor submitted a review petition in the tribunal.

Though sources at the corporation told DC that the civic administration has filed a review petition in the High Court against the NGT order, the mayor and the health standing committee chairperson refused to respond to the queries on it.

Grapevine has it that the corporation administration is contemplating taking ways to overcome the NGT order without paying the fine. The political unrest and the discussions over possible changes in the top leadership in the civic administration have also contributed to the inaction on the part of the ruling dispensation.

“The mayor and standing committee chairmen have been taking apathetic attitude in resolving crucial issues like NGT order on Brahmapuram. The reason might be the feud over the demand for the change of guard," said an opposition councillor on condition of anonymity.

The opposition alleged the mayor is not taking the matter with due seriousness and has not convened steering committee or council meeting to discuss the issue. “If the corporation has filed a review petition without the approval of the council, its is a violation of norms,”said V.P Chandran, CPM councillor.
