Tipu Jayanti: Karnataka CM tells top cops to be on their toes

State govt has tightened security by deputing a senior IPS officer to monitor every two districts, along with the district administration.

Bengaluru: In a bid to prevent untoward incidents during the forthcoming Tipu Jayanthi celebration, the state government has tightened security by deputing a senior IPS officer to monitor every two districts, along with the district administration.

At a meeting of senior police officers here on Sunday, Chief Minister Mr Siddaramaiah directed the jurisdictional SPs as well as DCs to be stationed at their headquarters on the eve of Tipu Jayanthi. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Home Minister Dr G. Parameshwar said that the DCs have been directed to hold peace meetings at the local level. Besides, the state government had requested for 10 companies of central forces to maintain peace.

Answering a question, Dr Parameshwar said the meeting deliberated both on celebrating Tipu Jayanthi as well as the allegations on political murders. “Some people are trying to politicize Tipu Jayanthi and derive political mileage from it. We will not allow anti-social elements to disturb peace. The police have been directed to arrest such elements and keep a tab on people, who try to disturb peace during the celebration,” he said.

The BJP is planning to hold a rally against Tipu Jayanthi celebrations. Besides, they have planned a protest against minister Mr Roshan Baig with Udupi MP Shobha Karandlaje claiming he was behind the murder of RSS worker Rudresh. The meeting deliberated on these issues too. Based on the sensitivity of each region, permission would be given for holding any protest.

“I appeal to those opposing Tipu Jayanti not to go ahead with their protest. Any murder is a murder and BJP should not politicize them. We have cracked all murder cases including the Rudresh murder in Bengaluru and Raju murder in Mysuru. We have cracked some murder cases that took place during BJP rule. Law and order is a state subject and the Centre cannot interfere in this. Nor has the Centre asked for a report on Rudresh murder case,” Dr Parameshwar said.
