Bengaluru: Beda protesters take to Gandhigiri
BENGALURU: Keeping the movement against the steel flyover alive, hundreds of citizens took part in a half-day satyagraha, organised by the Citizens for Bengaluru, in the city on Sunday.
Eighty-five-year-old Janardhan B.R. had cycled all the way from J.P. Nagar to the Freedom Park, the venue of the protest, to take part in the satyagraha and register his 'beda' protest against the steel monster.
“What is stopping the government from hearing the voices of the people? Can traffic be eased by building a steel flyover? Where are we heading with these monster flyovers," he asked. “On a bicycle, I can travel up to 15 km/hour, but two-wheelers and four-wheelers can cover only 8-10 km per hour in our traffic-choked city,” he said.
Ms Friederike, a German national settled in the city, termed the steel flyover a 'nonsensical project'. “I am all for development, but I am definitely not for chopping down a large number of trees for it.
Such flyovers do not solve the problem of traffic congestion. Instead, the government should focus on improving the public transport,” she said.
Representatives from various Resident Welfare Associations from across the city participated in the satyagraha. “The government should have the courtesy to listen to the people. There is so much opposition to the project. Why isn't the government coming forward to know why people are opposing this project,” asked Mr Praveen S., Secretary, Indiranagar 2nd Stage League.
