Hyderabad: Drunk drivers test cops' patience

In case of young drivers, especially girls, cops just stand helplessly.

Hyderabad: Weekends are turning out to be a headache for traffic cops as revellers who party until late at night often drink and drive and obstruct cops conducting checks.

In case of young drivers, especially girls, cops just stand helplessly, sometimes in fear of fake cases being filed against them like the one in Sultan Bazaar one month ago. During one such drunk and drive check on Friday, police booked cases against 82 people including 40 driving two wheelers and 42 four wheelers.

During the checks on Friday night at two different places, drivers under the influence of alcohol created nuisance on the road at night.

In one incident at Road No. 36/10 Jubilee Hills, a car registered on the name of Punjab Rice stores, was stopped by the police. But the lady driver did not cooperate. Speaking to this newspaper, Jubilee Hills inspector Balavathaiah, who was at the scene said, “When we stopped the car, the driver, Roma Chirag, did not cooperate with us and argued for on hour. When we finally checked her Blood Alcohol Count (BAC) it was 71 and 30 is the limit. We seized her car and booked a case.”

In an another incident at Diamond point two youths named P. Suhas Reddy and his friend tested the patience of the traffic cops. Speaking to DC Suman Kumar traffic inspector, Abids said, “They were wasting our time by diverting us. However, when we checked the Alcohol level it was 140 BAC.”
