City has to work to improve Swachh ranking: VK Jindal
Bengaluru: “Some cities, including Bengaluru, have seen ups and downs in the Swachh Survekshan Survey ranking. Bengaluru should work with dedication to improve its rating,” said Mr V.K. Jindal, Mission Director, Swachh Bharat Mission, at a one-day workshop on Swachh Survekshan Survey-2019 organised in the city on Saturday.
He lamented that the country is yet to get freedom from 'uncleanliness'. He called for a struggle, similar to the Independence movement, to get rid of garbage in the country and to make it clean. “If not, all the playgrounds in the country will be filled with garbage and all the oceans with plastic, instead of fish,” he warned.
Referring to Mahatma Gandhi, he said that, “The Mahatma said that we need to get freedom from uncleanliness before we get political freedom.”
He urged all organisations and people to join hands to make India clean, and to spread awareness. “Countries like Japan and Korea were lagging behind India, but they have pushed us back now,” he said.
Urban Development Department Secretary Anjum Parvez too lamented that Karnataka, which is leading in many spheres, is lagging behind in cleanliness. “The state government is ready to approve and release the needed money to proposals from municipal bodies on garbage management and cleanliness.”
He said that local bodies which should be aiming to process garbage scientifically in the land available to them are passing time figuring out other ways to manage garbage.
