Chennai: Woman delivers boy on train at Chengalpet
Chennai: A lone pregnant woman traveling in the general compartment of Ananthapuri Express delivered a baby boy when the train was leaving from Chengalpet station Thursday morning.
“At about 7.40 am, when the train started moving from the fifth platform of Chengalpet railway station towards Egmore, her water broke. Co-passengers pulled the chain while the elder women passengers used saris to cover the bay, and helped her deliver the baby,” said a GRP official, who was alerted by male passengers of the coach, who in turn informed the railways doctor.
“Even before the 108 help line was alerted, and the doctor turned up, she gave birth and then was shifted to Chengalpet Government hospital,” he said.
What left the police in a fix was that the woman who appeared to be in her late 20s declined to speak to them. “We spoke to her in all languages possible but she pretends to be mentally challenged as she is not responding,” said a GRP official investigating the case.
According to police sources, there was no phone or ID card with the woman. A ticket booked from Tiruchy was found with her, based on which police is trying to identify her and reach her family members.
Due to this incident, the train was delayed by 30 minutes at Chengalpet.
