Unauthorised optical fibre, TV cables under scanner
CHENNAI: Chennai corporation has decided to initiate action against internet and cable TV operators for possessing unauthorised optical fibre cable and TV cables in the city. The decision was taken at a review meeting conducted by Greater Chennai corporation commissioner G.Prakash.
According to sources, the corporation has decided to collect details of underground and overhead optical fibre cable and TV cables across the city. The corporation had granted sanction to 26 companies for setting up of underground and overhead optical fibre cable and TV cables. They were allowed to fix the cables for a total distance of 5,316 km. However, the corporation received complaints on unauthorised cables in the city.
The officials have decided to collect details cables fixed in 34,893 streets. They have completed enumeration work in 8,505 streets and identified overhead cables at a length of 4,449 km set up without valid permission.
Of this, 20 companies registered with the corporation have set up cables at a length of 1,361 km without permission.
The corporation has directed these companies to pay the necessary fees and fine. If they fail to obtain permission and regularise the illegal cables, the corporation will disconnet their cables.
