Supreme Court puts off ‘night traffic ban’ case

The ban orders were passed by Manoj Kumar Meena, Chamaraj Nagar district collector in Karnataka, on June 3, 2009.

WAYANAD: The Supreme Court on Friday postponed to four weeks the case on the night traffic ban on NH 766 connecting Kozhikode with Bengaluru through the Wayanad and Bandipur wildlife sanctuaries.

The Supreme Court had directed the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change to file an affidavit on Friday on the alternative route hinting at a possible closure of the present NH.

As the counsel for MoFE expressed lack of expertise on the reconstruction of an alternative road, the court also directed the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to submit an affidavit on constructing an alternate highway connecting the two states.

The Nilgiri-Wayanad railway and national highway action council had met Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to discuss the case in the SC. Rahul Gandhi MP had assured the service of prominent legal experts for it.
