Puducherry CM holds meet to decide action plan for monsoon

The meteorological department has predicted heavy rainfall next month and the administration need to be prepared to face it, CM said.

Puducherry: Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Thursday held a meeting with chief secretary, secretaries and senior government officials to discuss the preparedness of a draft action plan ahead of the onset of northeast monsoon.

The meeting was held to discuss the draft action plan prepared by the department of revenue and disaster management to deal with monsoon.

“The meteorological department has predicted heavy rainfall next month and the administration need to be prepared to face it. Thus the meeting was held to prepare the draft plan,” said the Chief Minister after the meeting.

Officials from all departments including the public works, electricity, fire, police and health attended the meeting, he said. Areas including Krishna Nagar, Rainbow Nagar, Bhoomiyanpet and Indira Gandhi square will be the most affected during heavy rains.

Ways and means to divert the stagnating water into the sea were discussed.

Tenders would be floated to clear the channels of the accumulated silt and Rs 16 crore was allocated to desilt tanks here.

“The Lt Governor has directed to hand over the task to disilt the tanks to ‘Eri Sanghams’,. Though the government is ready to do hand over the task , they are not ready to do the work. So the administration has decided to go for an open auction to give contract to desilt the tanks,” said Narayanasamy.

The Chief Minister said security would be provided to fishermen. Shifting of people from water-logged areas was also discussed in the meeting. A control room would be opened.

“Different departments of the administration are ready to face any emergency situation. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team had held several mock exercises, including schools. A mock tsunami drill was conducted at Nallavadu fishermen village on Wednesday,” said the Chief Minister.
