Telangana: Urdu library staff protest

Mr Ali asked the Minority Welfare Department to immediately release salaries and pay pending building rents and electricity bills.

Hyderabad: The issue pertaining to the non disbursal of salaries to employees working in Urdu libraries and computer centres took a political turn on Wednesday.

Mr Mohammed Ali Shabbir, Congress MLC and leader of opposition extended his support to the 177 employees who work in 43 Urdu computer centres and 31 libraries located in Telangana.

These facilities were introduced during the Telugu Desam governance in 1999 under the ‘Roshni scheme’ meant for employment of minorities. The scheme was continued later by the successive governments and managed by the Telangana State Urdu Academy. However, two years ago, the libraries and computer centers were handed over to the Telangana State Minorities Finance Corporation.

For the last one year, the employees have been facing problems in getting their salaries.

On Wednesday, the agitated employees staged a protest under the leadership of Mr Shabbir who demanded that the government immediately revamp the centers and libraries.

He demanded that the Minority Welfare Department immediately release the salaries, and pay up building rents and electricity bills.

“The employees have been working for several years and their services should be regularised,” he demanded.

Meanwhile, Mr B Shafiullah, Managing Director, Telangana State Minorities Finance Corporation said that they are awaiting the sanction of the budget from the finance department.

“We will release the salaries when the funds are released”, he said.
