Tamil Nadu:Christian Medical College suspends MBBS admissions

The government order has mandated common counselling for both government and management quota seats.

Chennai: In a protest against the common counselling for medical courses, the Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore has suspended admissions to MBBS and super speciality courses.

The medical college admits 100 students in MBBS and 192 students for postgraduate and 62 students for super speciality courses.

“We are not against Neet and even last year the students were admitted based on Neet marks. But, we oppose the common counselling,” said Dr Sunil Chandy, director, CMC. The CMC’s case opposing the common counselling is posted for hearing on October 11. The government order has mandated common counselling for both government and management quota seats.

“We have opposed the concept of common counselling which is not aligned with the hospital’s philosophy. We want to make socially conscious doctors. The hospital conducts suitability test for our students. Students’ attitude, empathy and willingness to stay in the country are essential to becoming a doctor,” he added.

The college hopes to get the exemption from common counselling in the Supreme Court.
