Thrissur: Acting on a report filed by the director-general of prisons Rishi Raj Singh, the state government has suspended the superintendent of District Prison in Viyyur here.
An inquiry by jail DIG had found that prison officers (formerly wardens) used to torture the inmates and the superintendent did not take proper action to prevent it.Mr Singh had conducted a flash visit to the prison on July 19 and interacted with prisoners who had complained to him over the torture, and the jail doctor who examined the prisoners confirmed the same.
The very same day, three prison officers whose name mentioned prisoners during their interaction with Mr Singh were suspended, and the remaining 38 prison officers transferred.
Sources close to the prison said that Mr Singh had sent a report to the government regarding the torture of prisoners which prompted the suspension of superintendent S. Sajeevan now.
