Rape-accused arrested after 5 years from Tamil Nadu

The court had also criticised the Thekkumbhagom police for laxity in nabbing the culprit.

Kollam: A youth who raped a 90-year-old woman and went absconding in 2014 was nabbed by the police after five years from Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, on Monday.

The accused, Williams Vijayan, 28, of Panavila Padinjattathil at Arinalloor, Thevalakkara, was on bail during the remand period when he absconded. The Kollam principal sessions court had stopped the case proceedings as he was not present to hear the chargesheet at the final stage of hearing. He was declared as an absconder by a court in Kollam earlier.

The court had also criticised the Thekkumbhagom police for laxity in nabbing the culprit. A special team was later formed to nab him from Tamil Nadu.

He used to sexually abuse the woman, his close relative, for over a period of time. The incident came to light after she was found critically ill and was given medical assistance.

He had left his home at the age of 7 and returned when he was 21.The rape took place at that time. He worked as a sound system operator in Tirunelveli, where he had married a girl and separated from her.

He was produced before the court and remanded.
