No role for govt in viability of self-financing engg colleges: K P Anbazhagan

He said in the self-financing engineering colleges, there would be no problem if the teacher-student ratio was maintained at 1:20.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Higher Education minister, K P Anbazhagan on Tuesday made it clear that the government had no role in ensuring the viability or continuance of self-financing Engineering colleges if they were unable to fill up all their seats in the current academic year.

It was the respective managements of the private Engineering colleges who will have to decide whether they wish to continue to run the colleges or not if B.E./B.Tech seats were left unfilled and "government cannot help in this matter," Mr Anbazhagan told reporters here after inaugurating the counseling session for B. Arch courses for wards of ex-Servicemen and for physically challenged students.

He said that the private engineering colleges have this year surrendered 29,092 management quota seats in all to the State government to be filled through students counseling process based on the principle of reservation.

The process of filling up these seats was going on; but if there was still unfilled seats left at the end of the counseling session, the Government could not do anything more, he made clear and added in such an eventuality, the respective managements will have to take a call on how to manage their institutions.

He said in the self-financing engineering colleges, there would be no problem if the teacher-student ratio was maintained at 1:20. If the ratio exceeded, the surplus teachers could be utilised for other assignments, the minister said. If there were still surplus teachers, he said the Government was helpless and the respective private college would have to deal with the situation, he added. The teacher-student ratio was decided by All India Council For Technical Education (AICTE), the minister pointed out, indicating the state had no role in it.

For the B. Arch courses, there are a total of 810 seats to be filled up, including 700 seats to be filled under government quota as per the rule of reservation and the remaining 110 are management quota seats. The counseling for B.Arch courses will go on till August 8.
