Kozhikode: Heavy rain in Malabar

Low-lying areas of city inundated, bus stand water-logged.

Kozhikode: Monsoon has strengthened in the northern regions of the state and heavy rains lashed the entire district on Monday.

The low-lying areas of the city were inundated and the mofussil bus stand junction was water-logged affecting the passengers.

The central meteorological department has declared red alert in Kozhikode, Malappuram and Idukki districts on Thursday. The department has warned of heavy rainfall (over 204 mm in 24 hours) and flash floods and landslides. Government officials have been asked to arrange rehabilitation of the affected people. Yellow alert has also been announced in the district on August 9.

The Disaster Management Authority alerted people living in low-lying areas and landslide-prone zones of last year to prepare an emergency kit with essential items like torchlight, medicines, candles, matchbox and biscuits for emergency evacuation or shifting.

The revenue department has issued special alerts to those in the high-ranges. Travel through the ghat section has been discouraged between 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. besides trips to hillly areas and beaches. Rivers should not be crossed without caution.
