Chennai: Red sanders worth Rs 30Lakh seized, one arrested

Police arrested Gopi (45), a carpenter who kept the redsanders hidden in the house.

CHENNAI: One person was arrested after the city police seized three tonnes of red sanders from his house in Thiuverkadu on Tuesday morning.

According to police sources, based on the tip-off that red sanders were hidden in a house at Koladi in Thiruverkadu, a special team of police was formed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police Eswaran.

Korattur inspector Vijayakumar headed the team. On Tuesday morning, the special team searched the house and found three tonnes of red sanders which is worth Rs 30 lakh.

Police arrested Gopi (45), a carpenter who kept the redsanders hidden in the house. He confessed to the police that he had come in contact with smuggler Rajesh who convinced him to keep the redsanders and said since he was a carpenter no one would suspect the wood being kept in his house.

The city police registered a case and launched a hunt for Rajesh. Korattur police have handed over the seized items to Thiruverkadu police, who will later hand it over to the forest department.
