Chennai: Mentally ill man rescued from lake
CHENNAI: Call it providence or good luck, a 29-year-old mentally retarded man who attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the Chitlapakkam lake near Tambaram on Tuesday, got stuck in the water hyacinth in the lake and was later rescued by fire and rescue personnel.
The victim was identified as Sayendran (29), native of Bihar. Police said, based on information that a man was struck in water hyacinth in the Chilapakkam lake and struggling for life, Chitlapakkam police and Tambaram fire and rescue personnel, rushed to the lake.
Sources said, a fire officer tied a rope to his waist and got inside the lake. The victim was rescued and taken outside safely.
An enquiry revealed that the man was a native of Bihar and has come to Chennai two months back in search of a job.
Since he did not get any offer, the man was mentally depressed and decided to jump into the lake and die.
But, death defied him as he got stuck among the weeds, and cried out for help.
On seeing him, locals alerted the police. Chitlapakkam police registered a case and took the man under custody.
The city police said they have sought help from the Bihar police to get more details about Sayendran.
