British envoy’s twitter account suspended

Sources in his office said that the reason for the suspension is not clear.

Hyderabad: The micro-blogging site Twitter has suspended the verified account of Andrew Fleming, The UK’s Deputy High Commissioner to AP and Telangana state.

One of the most popular diplomats in Hyderabad, he goes by the handle @Andrew007UK and has a following of 16.7 lakh people. Sources in his office said that the reason for the suspension is not clear.

The handle was reported off on the night of August 6.

“We have written to Twitter seeking the reason for the suspension; the online team is yet to respond. We are hoping it will be resolved soon,” said an officer in the High Commission.

The actual query from the High Commission to Twitter read: “The account of Deputy High Com-missioner @Andrew-007UK was suspended earlier today for reasons unexplained. He is actively seeking clarification from @twitter with a view to restoration as soon as possible.”

Asked if the diplomat had violated some Twitter rule, the officer quoted above said, “There is no reason for them to suspend given the content posted is friendly and does not violate their norms.”

This has come at a time when there are reports of Twitter suspending accounts of social media influencers. But to freeze the account of a top UK official is surely unprecedented.

Many of his followers from Hyderabad have questioned the suspension of Dr Fleming's account.
