Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has in its coordination meet with different departments said it will support the making and sale of only eco-friendly Ganesha idols during the upcoming Ganesha Chaturthi.

The civic body said it will conduct surprise raids at manufacturing units to check if Plastic of Paris (PoP) idols are being made.

The co-ordination committee meet was attended by the officials of the BBMP, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and the city police. The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) made it clear in the meet that there will be zero tolerance to the making and sale of PoP idols and under no circumstances will their immersion be allowed.

The apartment dwellers have been requested to use mobile immersion vans that will be pressed into service for immersion of Ganesha idols and appealed to people not to use their personal vehicles. The BBMP said it will increase the number of immersion vans across all the wards.

Sources said vendors will not be allowed to clear their old stock of PoP Ganesha idols after there were apprehensions of permitting clearance sale of old idols. Friends of Lakes gave a presentation that stressed on outreach programmes to create awareness on the need for conducting eco-friendly festivities. The meet discussed the norms on transporting segregated flower/green waste and other forms of waste.
