Southern Railway removes concrete fencing at Pazhavanthangal

The fencing in the St Thomas Mount railway station could not be removed.

Chennai: Two week after the tragic accident in St Thomas Mount that claimed five lives, the Southern Railway removed the concrete wall in Pazhavanthangal railway station, on Monday.

The accident happened on July 24, when footboard travellers in an overcrowded local train were trapped between the platform fencing and the train. Srinivasan(18), P.Sivakumar, J.Naveen Kumar (23), Bharath (17) and S.Velmurugan (25) died in the incident.

K.A Manoharan, commissioner of railway safety (southern circle,) had conducted an inspection at the St Thomas Mount railway station and convened a public hearing on the accident. “As most of the participants in the meeting suggested the removal of the concrete fencing on the fast lines, the railway decided to remove the structures,” the railway sources said.

The railway sources also said as the commissioner of railway safety investigating the incident, the fencing in the St Thomas Mount railway station could not be removed.

However, the officials removed a similar structure in Pazhavanthangal railway station on Monday and said fencing in Mambalam railway station also would be removed.

“As soon as the railway safety commissioner’s report submitted, the concrete wall that claimed five lives will be completely removed,” an official said.
