Madras high court is best in country, says CJ Indira Banerjee
Chennai: Chief Justice Indira Banerjee on Monday stated that Madras high court is the best one. While delivering a speech in farewell function felicitating her elevation to the Supreme Court, she said “after my 16-month stint in this prestigious high court, I can now say that this is the best high court for judges”.
When I was first sent to Chennai, I found a lot of people being apologetic. But I think I will now go and tell them that this is the best high court for a judge. I am thankful to the members of the Bar that they have not abstained from work even a single day in my tenure. The professional competency of the lawyers here is next to no one, she said.
She said she always loved Tamil Nadu and made annual trips to the state since 2006. She was thrilled when she was offered to take up the mantle of Chief Justice of this court. She has heighted the need for a shift from a court-centric approach to a litigant centric, service-oriented approach.
Concluding her speech she said “I can say that I will physically be in Delhi. But my heart will be in Tamil Nadu.” Chief Justice Indira Banerjee also made history by presiding the first all women first bench, with Justice Bhavani Subbaroyan soon after assuming the office in the court.
She is also the second woman Chief Justice to head the chartered high court, following Chief Justice Kanta Kumari Bhatnagar appointed in 1992. Justice Indira Banerjee is due to take oath as a judge of the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
