BENGALURU: Leaders of the state unit of Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday demanded the Bengaluru City police to constitute a special task force to check the supply and sale of drugs. Former deputy chief minister R. Ashok headed a delegation to meet police commissioner Sunil Kumar and requested him to check the drug menace. In a memorandum, the leaders stated that though the state government has assured in the House to control drug menace in the state, no action was initiated in this regard.
Home Minister had assured in the House that The Goonda Act would be invoked against drug peddlers, but his assurance remained only on paper as the city police have not raided any establishments where drugs were available, the memorandum added. "Illegal immigrants from Bangladesh are involved in drug peddling, but the government has not taken any action against foreigners who overstayed in the state. Large section of college going students have been affected due to drug mafia. Bengaluru has become another Punjab. In most of the cases, police department is hesitant to register cases against drug peddlers,” the leaders charged. The leaders warned of a state-wide agitation against the police department in case no action was initiated against drug peddlers.
