​Bengaluru: Benefits of science must reach society' Prof. K. Vidya

She added that the state award adds to her responsibility of inspiring more students to work towards innovations.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Awards for the best contributors in the field of sciences and engineering for the year 2017 were awarded on Monday with most awardees stressing that the need of the hour is to ensure that the fruits of scientific research benefit society.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle soon after receiving the Prof. Satish Dhawan Award for her contributions in the field of engineering sciences, Prof. K. Vidya Shetty from National Institute of Technology Surathkal said the very purpose of her working in science was to ensure her work reaches society.

She added that the state award adds to her responsibility of inspiring more students to work towards innovations rather than focussing on rote learning.

Former National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) director and vice-chancellor of Bangalore University Prof. H. A. Ranganath who received the Dr Raja Ramanna State Award in the category of science education, said, “Equipping affiliated colleges right at the undergraduate level itself is essential,” he opined. Expressing her delight on being selected for the Kalpana Chawla State Award for Women Scientists, Prof. Maneesha S. Inamdar, Dean (Fellowships and Extension Programmes) at JNCASR in the city said that the recognition is a great source of inspiration and encouragement for her.

Dr Karunakara N (Mangalore University), Dr Arun Mohan Isloor, Dr Jagadisha Thirthalli (NIMHANS), Prof. Patrick D’Silva (IISc.), Dr Nataraja Karaba N. (UAS, GKVK), Prof. Praveen C. Ramamurthy, Dr Chandra R. Murthy (IISc.), Prof. B.G. Mulimani and NABARD Chair Professor Dr S. Ayyappan and Dr G. Gururaj (NIMHANS) also received the awards constituted by the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology from Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
