Hyderabad: Tomato prices fall as crops arrive
Hyderabad: The prices of tomato, which skyrocketed to Rs 100 per kg last week, have come down with the arrival of the local crop.
On Sunday morning, the prices of tomatoes were recorded at Rs 37 per kg in the wholesale market. The prices were Rs 40 per kg in Rythu Bazaars, Rs 50 with retailers and Rs 60 per kg at supermarkets. By evening, farmers sold it for Rs 35 per kg in Rythu Bazaars. The traders are expecting the prices to come down in the coming days.
K.R. Vijay Kumar, estate officer of Mehdipatnam Rythu Bazaar, said that farmers from Vikarabad, Chevella, Moinabad, Ibrahimpatnam, Medchal, Patancheru and other areas have began sending the crops to the city markets and more products are expected in the coming days. “The price may fall down to Rs 15 per kg in Rythu Bazaars by this weekend,” he said.
As the demand is falling in the neighbouring states, farmers from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, too, have sent their stocks to the city.
Vijay Kumar also said that the prices of other local vegetables have also come down. “While the prices of vegetables like beet root, bitter gourd and ladyfingers come down, the rates of capsicum, ivy gourd and field beans decreased by Rs 10 per kg. It will fall again in the coming days,” he said.
