Hyderabad: BITS Pilani holds 6th annual convocation

The function had 656 students with first degrees, 68 with higher degrees and 20 PhD students.

Hyderabad: The sixth annual convocation of Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani - Hyderabad was held on Sunday. The function had 656 students with first degrees, 68 with higher degrees and 20 PhD students.

Chancellor Kumar Mangalam Birla stressed on the importance of startups like Uber which have caught up with the world. He further said, “Technology is the new wheel that turns the world. Have an appetite for risk and find more innovative Indian startup success stories for motivation.”

The chief guest on the occasion was Dr Rajendra Singh, who is known for water conservation, a winner of the Stockholm Water Prize said, “In the arid regions, there is forced migration and this displacement can only be combated with good environment.”

He exhorted the students to build a bridge between the nature and man with sustainable techniques for the progress of the nation.

While presenting the university’s report, vice-chancellor Souvik Bhattacharya said, “66 new faculty members have joined our institute this year and our PhD scholar population has grown from 417 to 855 with female strength up to 38 per cent.”

Professor G Sundar, Director of the Hyderabad campus, said, “Bits Pilani has 89 sponsored research projects and various workshops are conducted for students and teachers. The Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) strives to train our faculty members to keep abreast of latest developments.” Around 145 students were awarded a second degree under the dual degree scheme.
