Chennai: Six killed in multiple collision on highway

The mishap happened at Nandiyalam in Vellore district at around 3.30 pm.

Chennai: As many as six people including two women were killed and seven others were injured in a multiple collision involving four vehicles on Chennai - Bengaluru highway on Sunday afternoon. The mishap happened at Nandiyalam in Vellore district at around 3.30 pm.

A Mercedes Benz, a Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Indica and a two-heeler were involved in the multiple collision. The Benz coming from Bengaluru to Chennai had moved on to the wrong side of the road after hitting a two-wheeler, which reportedly abruptly stopped in front of the car triggering the multiple collision that sniffed out six lives.

Mercedes Benz car was coming Bengaluru to Chennai, while the other two vehicles going on the opposite side, police said. Police identified three deceased, who were traveling in Scorpio as Lakshmiprabha, Govindaraj and Bhagyalakshmi, from Bengaluru.

Two-wheeler rider Ravichandran of Nandiyalam too died on the spot. Gnanaraj, a native of Kancheepuram who was traveling in Tata Indica, died on the way to hospital. Identity of another victim in the indica car is yet to be ascertained, police said adding that all the passengers in the Benz escaped with injuries.

Five of the bodies were later shifted Vellore government hospital while another body is kept in CMC, Vellore, police said. All the injured have been taken to Vellore government hospital.

Police said that the multiple collision involving four vehicles had thrown the Sunday busy traffic on Chennai - Bengaluru highway out of gear for more than one hour.
