Parents want accounts of engg colleges checked

Colleges which in the block period of 2016-19 were charging Rs 97,000 per year have increased it to Rs 1,26,000 per year, they alleged.

Hyderabad: Parents and students have complained that private engineering colleges had increased the fee by 30 per cent, and demanded that the government conduct an audit.

Colleges which in the block period of 2016-19 were charging Rs 97,000 per year have increased it to Rs 1,26,000 per year, they alleged.

On Friday, the government had set the hike at 20 per cent for colleges charging less than Rs 50,000 and 15 per cent for those with fee above Rs 50,000.

The Telangana Parents Association asked the Telangana Admission and Fee Regulatory Commission (TAFRC) to carry out a proper scrutiny of the college accounts after the admission process and streamline the system.

TPA president Nagati Narayana said, “The setting of the block period fee structure is to ensure that education is affordable.

“The private colleges are not following the government norms. To verify this, it very important that in the next three months the account of each college must be checked. If they have charged in excess, the fee must be adjusted for the following year.”

A parent on condition of anonymity explained, “Last year the fee was `86,000 per year and it was found that the college had collected `4 crore in excess from the students.

The money was reimbursed the next year. We need the fee regulation committee to be active and check colleges diligently.”

After the revelation, it was found that many others had allegedly altered the books of accounts and complained to the government that they were running in losses.
