Kochi: Cardinal in for more trouble
Kochi: Cardinal George Alenchery, Major Archbishop of Syro-Malabar Church, is facing more trouble from a section of clergy and laity of Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese opposed to him.
They plan to get approval for a resolution expressing lack of faith in the leadership of the cardinal in all parish councils under the archdiocese on Sunday. The idea is to involve the laity in the ongoing dispute amongst the clergy between those supporting and opposing the cardinal.
According to the spokesperson of the Archdiocese Movement for Transparency (AMT), nearly 100 parish councils out of the 320 parishes of the archdiocese have already endorsed the resolution passed by around 250 priests at a meeting held in Kochi a few days ago.
Apart from expressing lack of faith in the leadership of Cardinal Alenchery, the resolution has also sought a transparent and comprehensive report on the probe held in connection with the controversial land dealings of the archdiocese.
The resolution also condemned the removal of auxiliary bishops Sebastian Adyanthrath and Jose Puthenveettil from the Major Archbishop's residence following Alenchery assuming his earlier position as head of the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese.
The opponents of the cardinal will also hold a meeting of the select members of the laity in Kochi on Sunday to discuss a mass convention of the faithful of the archdiocese.
The meeting to be held at Renewal Centre at Kaloor will be attended by two representatives from each parish in the archdiocese, said the spokesman. According to him members of the pastoral council and Kerala Catholic Youth Movement will also attend the meeting which may pass a resolution against Cardinal Alenchery and his supporters.
