Fake news purveyor disappears'

Hegde's message cited the National Crimes Record Bureau (NCRB) as the source.

New Delhi: Mahesh Hegde, the controversial founder of the fake news website Postcard News, seems to have gone incognito from the twitter world after Twitterati questioned his latest ‘claim’ on rape cases in the country.

Hegde, who had once been arrested by the Karnataka police for spreading fake news and communally sensitive reports, claimed on Twitter that 81,000 out of 84,374 (96 per cent) of rape-accused in the country during 2016-18 were Muslims and 96 per cent of the victims were Hindus. His tweet was retweeted around 1,200 times.

But once Twitter users started terming his message fake and asked for the source, his account went missing — either it was suspended or he deleted himself.

Hegde’s message cited the National Crimes Record Bureau (NCRB) as the source, but this was a lie since the NCRB does not publish data on religious status of criminals or victims.
