Will redress workers' grievances: Tamil Nadu transport minister

Chennai: Transport minister M.R. Vijayabaskar assured to take actions to end the problems faced by the transport department very soon.

He said the government is working out plans to end the crisis and the details could not be divulged now. Referring to the huge losses, he said the transport corporations are functioning with service motive and it could not be perceived on profit-loss outcome.

Compared to other states, Tamil Nadu is running buses with the least fare and said Kerala is collecting 65 paise per kilometre and Andhra Pradesh collects 62 paise per kilometre. In Karnataka the fare is 59 paise per km while Tamil Nadu collects 42 paise per km.

He said the government is operating about 12,000 villages in rural areas and they are incurring losses. The minister also recalled that Chief Minister K. Palaniswami had allocated Rs 1,250 crores for the transport department. Soon, the workers’ problems will be fully solved he said and added that a corpus fund would be created to solve the department’s woes.The problem did not start with the AIADMK government and it continues for the last two decades, he added.
