Flash rain batters Hyderabad

Certain parts of city received up to 4 cm rainfall, the highest in the day.

Hyderabad: July started on a dry note but on Thursday the twin cities received moderate to heavy rain especially towards the evening. Certain areas in the twin cities received flash showers — heavy rain for a short duration — amounting to 4 cm rainfall, the highest in the day.

The last time the city received heavy rain was on June 8, when around 8 cm of rain was recorded. Since then, the city has been recording occasional scanty rainfall or moderate rainy spells.

Since the beginning of the month, the southwest monsoon currents over Telangana have been weak. The India Meteorological Department-Hyderabad has declared that only a weather system developing over the Bay of Bengal would revive the monsoon currents.

The local weather bureau has said that the monsoon would continue to be weak over the state. There is no heavy rainfall warning for the state. The IMD has predicted moderate to light rainfall almost all over the state.

The state was rain-surplus with 54 per cent extra rainfall in June. Due to the relatively dry first week of July, the surplus percentage has now dropped to 23. The city recorded 64 per cent excess rainfall in June; that figure has dropped to 19 per cent as of Thursday.

According to the IMD, the forecast for the state was light to moderate rain or thunderstorms very likely to occur at a few places over Telangana state. On Friday, the city will witness a generally overcast sky with one or two spells of rain or thunderstorms.
