Mysuru district has registered 256 cases of dengue, second only to Bengaluru.

Mysuru: The Heritage City of Mysuru, considered one of the cleanest cities in the country, is ironically facing a threat from the deadly dengue disease.

There is an abrupt rise in cases of dengue here with as many as 256 confirmed cases, which is second only to Bengaluru.

Relatives of patients are now complaining of shortage of beds at city hospitals. Meanwhile, Mysuru Deputy Commissioner Mr D Randeep has formed 15 vigilance teams to monitor dengue related cases in Mysuru city, apart from forming one team each for all seven taluks in Mysuru district. From January 1 this year till July 5, Karnataka has registered 2,061 confirmed cases of dengue with BBMP reporting the highest number- 1105 (as per data reported from private hospitals), Mysuru, 256, Mandya, 213, Chamarajnagar, 98, and Kodagu,74, according to health department sources.

Mysuru had 1,477 suspected cases with the blood samples sent for testing to government labs. In 2014, 66 cases of confirmed dengue cases were reported in Mysuru, which went up to 382 cases in 2015 and 582 in 2016.

When contacted Mysuru District Health Officer Dr B Basavaraju said, “Due to viral mutation, the number of cases goes up once in two or three years. The cases are more in city areas than in rural parts. Among 13 suspected dengue deaths reported in Mysuru, a district level dengue death audit committee formed by the Mysuru Deputy Commissioner, suspects that only one death is due to dengue. The case has been referred to the state level audit committee. With people voluntarily coming and admitting patients to hospitals, shortage of beds has been reported. However, the blood bank at KR Hospital has adequate stocks of platelets,” he said.
