Swimming part of curriculum from this year

CM said that the drug mafia was posing a threat to the future generation and the public would come forward to take them on.

Thrissur: Swimming will be part of the school curriculum starting from this academic year, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said.

Inaugurating the state-level school re-opening event (Pravesanol- savam) at Chembuchira at Kodakara near here on Thursday, he also announced that in all the 140 assembly segments swimming pools would be constructed.

Speaking against the use of contraband substances among students, CM said that the drug mafia was posing a threat to the future generation and the public would come forward to take them on.

“It is the declared policy of the government to ensure that even in government schools functioning in far-off places education of highest standards will be ensured,” he said.

He, however, expressed apprehension about the attitude of the aided sector in raising the infrastructure and standards of public education.

“It has to be noted that even after government promising huge funds of even a crore of rupees for improving facilities and quality of education in aided schools as a part of the Public Education Rejuvenation Programme of the state government, how many of the aided schools have made use of such an opportunity,” he said. He also stated that the Rejuvenation Programme had made a big impact on government schools.

Vijayan slams media

Speaking at a CPM event at Mattathur here on Thursday, Mr Vijayan said that certain media houses tried to defeat LDF in the Lok Sabha elections in which the front could manage to win just a single seat out of 20 in the state.

“Media created an impression that LDF candidates will be defeated in the polls and it may have influenced voters. Besides that, voters cast their vote for UDF intending to defeat BJP candidates. There were several efforts to mislead them, and it now seems that they have realised it. I don’t think people hold anything against the LDF,” he added.
