KSRTC buses to ‘reduce’ emission of black smoke

The management has made it compulsory for every bus to be subjected to pollution testing at a regular interval of six months.

Kochi: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) finally took measures to ensure that pollution from its buses is within permissible limits.

The management has made it compulsory for every bus to be subjected to pollution testing at a regular interval of six months. “To facilitate this, we’re setting up pollution testing machines at all main depots across the state. The tenders for procuring the machines were floated and the procurement process is on,” a senior RTC official said. Further, a complaint mechanism has been set up under which the public can report the cases when the buses ‘spew’ black smoke or seem to emit gases in larger quantity than normal.

The public can click mobile pictures of the same and send the same to the mobile numbers 8301849100 (northern region), 94470-71015 (central region) and 9447570044 (southern region).

“Incomplete combustion of diesel, petrol, fuel oils and a mixture of fuel oils derived from crude oil leads to environment degradation. We’ve directed garage in-charge to daily ensure that the engines are in good condition. This will also add to our efforts to increase the mileage and cut fuel costs,” the official said.
