Gold gopura at Udupi temple
Udupi: It was a special day for devotees as the seers of Asta Mathas installed the golden 'Shikhara,' over the 'Suvarna Gopuram,' of the Garba Griha at Krishna Matha and dedicated it to the Lord on Thursday.
With this Udupi Sri Krishna Matha became one among the few temples in the country to have a 'Suvarna Gopuram,' (golden roof).
The work on the project started in November 2018. Various programmes are being held at Udupi to mark the dedication of the Suvarna Gopuram since May 31. The 'Shikhara,' was installed atop the golden gopuram on Thursda while the. Brahmakalashotsava will be held on Sunday.
The dedication ceremony of Suvarna Gopura stared early in the morning with various religious programs. Special arrangements were made to broadcast the event live.
After various religious ceremonies and Pooja to the Kalsha, the seers offered Kalasha abhisheka to the golden Shikhara installed atop the Garba Griha. This marked the dedication of the golden roof to Lord Krishna.
The Golden Gopuram is a dream project of Sri Vidyadheesha Teertha Swamiji of Palimaru Mata, the present Paryaya Peetadhipathi. The 2,500 sq feet Gopuram of the Matha is covered with about 100 kg gold. The cost of the project is estimated to be about Rs 40 crore.
Earlier the roof of the Garba Gruha was covered with copper sheets. Now Gold is cast on silver sheets. About 500 kg silver has been used for this.
