Archbishop demands probe into attacks against Christians in Manipur

Hyderabad: Archbishop of Hyderabad Cardinal Poola Anthony, while condemning the recent attacks and persecution of Christians in Manipur, expressed solidarity with all the affected communities.

“While condemning these despicable acts, we ask our faithful Christians and defenders of democracy not to react violently,” a statement from the Archbishop said here on Sunday.

Cardinal Anthony called upon the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into these attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Responding to reports that a number of Churches and other Church properties were being set ablaze and vandalised, he said places of worship hold immense significance for believers. They serve as sacred spaces where people gather to seek solace, find strength and nurture their spiritual lives, he said.

“The attack on holy sites not only violates their sanctity but also inflicts pain, fear and sorrow upon the faithful,” he added.

Cardinal Anthony said that it was disheartening to witness an in increase in violence, discrimination, and hostility directed towards Christians solely because of their religious beliefs. Such acts not only violate the fundamental principles of religious freedom and human rights but also undermine the very foundations of a just and tolerant society, he said.

He urged the government and the concerned parties to engage in diplomatic efforts, dialogue and peaceful negotiations in order to put an end to such acts. By doing so, an environment of religious tolerance and understanding, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their faith, can live in peace and harmony can be fostered.

Cardinal Poola is also the president, Telugu Catholic Bishop's Council (TCBC) representing Catholic Bishops and the Catholic Community in both Telugu states.
