Shut all illegal resorts: Coimbatore district SP Sujith Kumar

Police also arrested 14 of them including a 30-year-old Russian for supplying drugs to the youth.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore district SP Sujith Kumar has directed that all ‘illegal resorts’ functioning in the district be shut down.

The SP’s move comes in the wake of the district police recently rounding up 159 college students and youth at a resort near Sethumadai-Anna Nagar, where a rave party had allegedly led to a ruckus, amid drunken brawl and narcotics freely flowing with liquor.

Police also arrested 14 of them including a 30-year-old Russian for supplying drugs to the youth. The resort owner was also held.

However, this is not the end of the story as resorts with ‘permits’ like in Anaikatti hills near Coimbatore, also posing environmental issues, by causing disturbance to wildlife movement in the area and at times leading to poaching.

According to a tribal head in Anaikatty hills, few resorts functioning with permission across the Western Ghats in Coimbatore are taking their guests for illegal night safaris and trekking for animal sighting, allegedly bribing the forest staffs which would create possibilities for man-animal conflicts in Anaikatty hills.
