K Chandrasekhar Rao skips local body polls vote for Front

Clashes reported between TRS and Congress in Khammam; KCR misses election to parley with Communists.

Hyderabad: The first phase of the Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTC) and Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTC) elections held on Monday went off peacefully, barring minor clashes between the TRS and the Congress workers.

Around 80 per cent polling was recorded, though the final figure will be announced by the State Election Commission.

In the first phase on Monday, the elections were held for 212 ZPTCs and 2,365 MPTCs.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao did not vote. This has been criticised by opposition parties. Mr Rao left for Kerala by special helicopter in the afternoon and could have voted in the morning as booths opened at 7 am.

Seven people sustained injuries in Ayyagaripalle in Mudigonda mandal in Khammam district as the Congress and the TRS workers clashed.

Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. The injured were shifted to the Government Hospital in Khammam.

In Tirumalayapalem mandal headquarters, tension prevailed as TRS and Congress workers clashed. At one stage, the situation got out of hand. But, the police reached the scene and the warring workers scattered.

EC nod for polls to 3 MLC seats

The Election Commission has given the green signal to hold MLC elections for three vacancies of local body seats elections for three vacancies in the Legislative Council. The election notification will be issued on Tuesday and elections will be held on May 31 and results will be declared on June 3.

The MLC elections will be held for Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda and Warangal local body seats. Patnam Narendar Reddy (Nalgonda) and Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy were elected to the Assembly and resigned as MLCs. Konda Murali from Warangal district resigned as an MLC before joining the Congress from the TRS.
