CB-CID raids fleeing lawyer's residence
Chennai: CB-CID sleuths have raided lawyer Thamizharasan, who appeared on behalf of the parents of 94 kids killed in the school fire tragedy in Kumbakonam in 2004 seeking compensation, on Sunday.
Ever since the allegation of embezzlement levelled against the lawyer surfaced, Thamizharasan has been absconding. Following the complaint of misappropriation, a 14-member special team headed by Thanjavur DSP, Thangavelu, is said to have been camping in Chennai for over a week to nab him.
"Following the absconding of the lawyer, the CB-CID team decided to raid his house by opening the house located in Vijayarangam Street in Irumbuliyur near Tambaram. As the house was locked, the sleuths sought the permission of Tahsildar and the raid was conducted in the presence of revenue officials," a source said.
While others were not allowed inside the two-storey building, local police guarded the house as a precautionary measure. The search commenced from 7 am and went on into the evening and CB-CID sleuths are have said to have seized several documents from Thamizharasan's house. The allegation is Thamizharasan had swindled up to Rs 3 crore meant for the victims' families as compensation.
As many as 94 primary students of Krishna English Medium School were burnt to death in their classroom as the thatched roof caught fire 15 years ago.
Thamizharasan, who represented their parents in the HC seeking higher compensation from the government, allegedly withdrew huge sum from each of their accounts in a fraudulent manner after the compensation of about Rs 5 lakh each was deposited in their accounts by the government.
