Traces of rain in Chennai outskirts

Scattered clouds in the city raised hopes of some wet weather coming through.

Chennai: Traces of rainfall in the city outskirts after a sultry Friday morning came as a respite to Chennaiites who have suffered high daytime temperatures and radiation in the last few days. Scattered clouds in the city raised hopes of some wet weather coming through, but the weathermen predict there is little or no chance of showers over the next two days.

The day temperature in the city took a marginal dip, with the maximum at 36.2 degree Celsius, which was relatively less than even Coimbatore, which recorded 37.7 C.

The Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, S. Balachandran, said that cloud convection resulted in a bit of rainfall. “Valparai in Coimbatore district received over 1cm rainfall. Slight rainfall was recorded in Salem, Vellore and Tiruttani due to the strong south easterlies traveling through the state,”
said Met department official.

“A heavy spell of rain with maximum wind speed is anticipated in Vellore and Tiruttani,” they added. The Met men predict heavy rainfall in some interior districts in the next two days. Chances of thunderstorm activity in Chennai, however, remain bleak, said independent weather blogger, V. Gokul.

Football player C. Prathap said some rain is required to moderate the temperature. “Water from the pipes is boiling too. It is a bad time for field workers and sports enthusiasts,” he said.
