MANGALURU: With the entire coastal region reeling under acute shortage of water, several hospitals, medical colleges and private nursing homes have resorted to rationing the elixir of life by requesting patients and visitors not to waste it.
Though Wenlock district government hospital does not face shortage of water because of two open wells and a borewell on the campus, the authorities have restricted the time for washing clothes. On the other hand, Father Muller Hospital has started announcements in three languages- Kannada, English and Malayalam, 3-4 times in a day, requesting patients not to waste water. “Of the 2,500-odd hostel inmates we have sent 70 per cent. However only those who have examinations now and within few days and PG students who are involved in hospital service are staying in hostels. Water in the hostel is rationed but water service in hospital is unaffected. All services in the hospital continue without any change. Of the 1,250 beds 80 per cent are occupied. We are ensuring that patients do not face any problem,” administrator Fr Rudolph told Deccan Chronicle.
Meanwhile, according to sources A J institute has sent home some of its students because of shortage of water in hostels.
Pressure on visitors
Authorities of two hospitals have decided to reduce pressure of water during visiting hours because they came across instances of visitors using toilets and bathrooms while calling on patients. “In few cases, we have noticed an increase in the number of visitors. They prefer using our toilets. Though the number of such visitors is less we plan to reduce the pressure of water only during visiting hours so that visitors do not misuse our water,” said an officer of the hospital.
