Thiruvananthapuram: Election Commission query on moratorium

Apart from the moratorium on farm loans, the EC also returned three proposals seeking more clarification.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Election Commission has sought has sought more clarification on the state government's request for extending moratorium on agricultural loans till December 31.

A week ago, Chief Electoral Officer Teeka Ram Meena had found the explanation given by the government on the need for implementing moratorium satisfactory. Subsequently he forwarded the government request to the Election Commission.

The CEO had sent 10 to 15 proposals including moratorium request to EC. While some were approved, more clarification was sought on others. When asked what more clarification has the EC sought on moratorium, the Mr Meena said; ‘’I got the intimation from EC only today and the same will be sent to government. I will not be able to disclose the details," he said.

Sources said the EC has pointed out that since the order on moratorium on farm loans issued last year was already in force till October, what was the need to issue a fresh order extending it till December 31.

Apart from the moratorium on farm loans, the EC also returned three proposals seeking more clarification. Three proposals on which the EC has sought more clarification are Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Scheme, renovation of government secretariat building and Kerala Medial Education Act (Amendment) Bill 2017.
