The first padayatra will conclude at Cuddalore after crossing 168 km distance covering all Delta districts.

Chennai: As part of the ongoing protest over Cauvery water issue, Opposition parties have decided to launch two Cauvery rescue padayatras in Delta districts. While a group led by M.K. Stalin will commence the agitation at Mukkombu on Saturday another group will start the padayatra at Ariyalur on April 9. The first padayatra will conclude at Cuddalore after crossing 168 km distance covering all Delta districts. Dravida Kazhagam leader K. Veeramani will launch the trips. Leaders and a large number of cadres of the DMK, the Congress, CPM, CPI, IUML, MMK and VCK will take part in the agitation.

Speaking to reporters after an all-party meeting on Friday, M.K. Stalin said all party leaders have decided to intensify the agitation over Cauvery water issue. The leaders have decided to take part in padayatra to win the rights of the state in the dispute. He has invited people to take part in the agitation in large numbers. Stalin said the leaders have also decided to stage a protest in the state on April 11 against the Supreme Court order on the SC/ST Act.

He said the DMK never said that the IPL matches must not be held in Chennai. However, “I only asked the organisers to look into the issues raised by people and do necessary things,” he added. Stalin has thanked the people, leaders, traders and others for making the Statewide band held on Thursday a success. The meeting was chaired by M.K. Stalin at party headquarters at Anna Arivalayam. Among others, TNCC president Su. Thirunavukkarasar, CPI (M) State Secretary, K. Balakrishnan, CPI State Secretary, R. Mutharasan and VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan took part in the meeting.
