Chennai: The Madras high court has declined to direct the superintendent of police, Ariyalur district, to dispose of a representation, which sought police protection to install the statue of Dr Ambedkar at Adi Dravidar co-lony, Kuzhumur Village, Ariyalur district.
A division bench comprising Justices T.S.Sivagnanam and M.Seshasayee however granted liberty to petitioner M.Dhanakodi, organiser of statue kuzhu and state deputy sectary (election) of Viduthalai Katchi, to file a fresh representation with relevant documents to the authority concerned.
The bench said the government pleader submitted that pursuant to the orders passed by the Supreme Court, no person has vested with right to erect a statue in public place or government land. In any event the representation dated December 8, 2017, made by the petitioner lacks particulars and relevant documents were not attached, he had added. “Therefore, this court is not inclined to issue any directions in the petition to dispose of the representation. However, we grant liberty to the petitioner to file a fresh representation with relevant documents to the authority concerned”, the bench added.
In his petition, Dhanakodi submitted that the villagers of Kuzhumur have decided to install a statue for revolutionist Dr Ambedkar and a place was selected for installing the statue made of bronze in the Adi Dravidar Colony area, Kuzhumur village. As per the decision of the villagers, he sent a representation dated December 8, 2017, to the superintendent of police, Ariyalur district, to give protection to install the statue. However, there was no response. Therefore, he has filed the present petition, he added.
