Meeting on Assembly seat hike inconclusive

Sujana Chowdary told DC that the meeting was held with Union ministers Rajnath Singh and M. Venkaiah Naidu.

Hyderabad: A meeting to decide the nature of amendment to bring for increasing the Assembly seats in TS and AP that was held on Thursday remained inconclusive. Union minister Sujana Chowdary told DC that the meeting was held with Union ministers Rajnath Singh and M. Venkaiah Naidu in which only preliminary discussions were held and no conclusive decision was taken in view of pressing engagements of the home minister.

Mr Chowdary said another meeting will be held on Monday to discuss the amendment to bring to increase the number of Assembly seats — whether it should be for Section 26 of AP Reorganisation Act or for Article 170 of the Constitution. If is an amendment to the Act is brought, there would be no need to refer the matter to the states and it could be done with simple majority in both the Houses of Parliament.

If it is an amendment to Article 170, it would need to be passed by a special majority in both the Houses as well as by 50 per cent of the Legislatures. Delimitation of the Assembly constituencies has been frozen till 2026 as per Article 170.
