Hyderabad: 2-year wait for 2BHK houses

Slum-dwellers forced to stay in rented houses bearing brunt of delay.

Hyderabad: The delay in the Telangana state government’s flagship double bedroom housing project for the poor in the city has been irking the beneficiaries. They vacated their slums about two years ago with the assurance from the GHMC officials that the houses would be constructed, completed and handed over in six months.

The beneficiaries are now clueless about the completion of the 2BHK project in their respective areas and claim that staying in rented houses has increased their financial burden.

The corporation has managed to complete a mere 236 2BHK houses till date. Out of which, 176 double bedroom houses at Singam Cheruvu Thanda in Nacharam were completed and handed over to beneficiaries during March last year. Interestingly, the civic body has managed to complete the construction of 60 2BHK houses at Syed Sab Ka Bada (48 2BHK houses at Malakpet) and Kidki Boodh Alisa (12 2BHK houses at Yakutpura).

Sharing his experience, T. Anjanna of Kattlemandi slum in Goshamahal said that the corporation had convinced the dwellers to vacate the slum, with the assurance that it would construct 128 2BHK units. Mr Anjanna said that the authorities also assured that construction would be completed within six months but two years had passed and the corporation had not even completed a single unit and in fact, work on the 2BHK had come to a grinding halt.

“We have been living in rented houses for two years. We earn about Rs 12,000 per month and are spending Rs 4,000 towards house rent which has become a herculean task when you have to provide for education for two and feed four members,” he added.

Echoing his concern, A. Rajeshwar, living at Bandamaisamma slum in Sanathnagar said that 2BHK works did not see any progress since August last year. He said as many as 300 families living in the slum bore the brunt due to civic apathy.
