Chennai: Madambakkam residents face garbage disposal issues

Problem aggravated after the dustbins were removed to be replaced by new ones. However, the new ones are yet to come.

CHENNAI: Waste management has always been one of the major problems of Chennai. Madambakkam town panchayat, near Tambaram, is one such area in the city with unabated garbage disposal issues for years now. Residents of the locality now allege that the problem aggravated in the recent times owing to the removal of dustbins from the locality at Selaiyur in the suburban area.

“Firstly, door-to-door garbage collection is very poor in the area. Conserv
ancy workmen come once in a month and never pay heed to our complaints,” said K. Ramakrishnan, a resident of the area.

Residents are, hence, forced to dispose the garbage in open as the dustbins in the area have been removed to be replaced by new ones. However, the public has been waiting for replacement for ages.

What exacerbates the issue is burning of waste. Conservancy workers, once in two month burn the garbage in open space and the officials of the area did not lend an ear in the beginning and refused to believe about incineration. Recently the residents submitted photographic evidence, they agreed to take the issue into account.

About 12 tonnes of garbage is generated every day in the 15 wards of the town panchayat, which has a population of 30,000.
